This province is one of the most densely populated areasin Indonesia. The city came into existence in 1755, after the division of Mataram into the Sultanate of Yogyakarta andSurakarta (Solo). Gamelan, classical and contemporary Javanese dances, wayang kulit (shadow puppet), theater andother expressions of traditional art will keep visitors enthralled. Local craftsmen excel in the art of batik, silver and leather. Next to art, contemporary traditional has found fertile soil in Yogyacommunity-oriented culture. ASRI, the Academy of Fine Arts is acenter of arts and Yogyakarta it self has given its name to animportant school of modern painting in Indonesia, perhaps bestpersonified by the famous Impressionist Indonesia, late Affandi.
